This event will take place at Liverpool Law Society on 24 November 2016, with the aim of matching people in the legal sector with opportunities to provide pro-bono advice, volunteer or help third sector legal advice organisations in a range of other different ways.
Third sector legal advice has undergone dramatic change in the last three years in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool CR). Third sector advice agencies in the Liverpool CR have lost legal aid contracts worth millions of pounds and have also typically seen cuts of more than 50% in local authority funding. At the same time, they have seen an increased demand for advice. Whilst there is no substitute for properly funded services, we aim to help them fill the gap with this event. Of course, there are also many benefits to those in the private sector who are willing to help out, from personal fulfilment to raising the profile of your firms.
Speakers from a number of third sector legal advice organisations including LJMU Legal Advice Clinic, Vauxhall Law Centre and North West Legal Support Trust will give short presentations on the opportunities they have available. This might be in terms of regular visits from advisers, ad-hoc requests for advice, training, fundraising, profile raising, provision of equipment, filling trustee and director roles or collaboration on projects. There will be an opportunity for delegates to ask questions before we get onto the matchmaking, when delegates will be linked to opportunities that interest them.
This is not just aimed at lawyers but anyone from the legal sector who has something to offer in one of these areas. You could be a solicitor who is able to act as a mentor at a student legal advice clinic, a CSR representative hoping to encourage others in your firm to do more pro-bono work, an in house accountant with finance expertise to offer or a business development manager who can help raise an organisation’s profile.
