On 7th November 2019 Liverpool Law Society’s President Chris Topping hosted the 192nd Annual Dinner. Over 250 guests gathered at the remarkable setting of The Shanky Hotel, for a yearly event surrounded by good food and wine, and even better company. Whether you are a red or a blue, we hope you all agree the venue was exquisite.
We would like to thank those who attended the 192nd Annual Dinner. We hope you were all left both inspired and challenged. Firms, chambers, sponsors and their guests who attended were:
Bennett Williams Solicitors, Bermans, BLM, Brabners, Carpenters, Catherine Higgins Law, Excello Law, EY Riverview Law, Hill Dickinson, Husband Forwood Morgan, Interlink Recruitment, Jackson Lees Group, JMW, Latitude Law, Levins Law, Liverpool Law Society, Liverpool University Law School, Merseyside Junior Lawyers Division, Midshire Business Systems, Morecrofts, MSB, O’Connors Legal Services, Oriel Chambers, Past Presidents, Slater & Gordon, SPG Law, St John’s Buildings Chambers, Taylor Wessing, The University of Law and Weightmans.
Chris Topping, the President of Liverpool Law Society, welcomed members and their guests, and hosted Presidents and Chair People of professional associations, including the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Merseyside, Lord Mayor Councillor Anna Rothery, our guest speaker James Timpson OBE along with members of the judiciary and civic dignitaries.
The Annual Dinner is a fantastic occasion to meet with colleagues and acquaintances, introduce new entrants to the market and spend time talking and celebrating being part of the city region’s strong legal profession. President Chris Topping declares Liverpool as a major player in the business of law. Special mention to SPG Law, who made sure that the BHP Bilton Litigation stayed in Liverpool, new members of the Society Taylor Wessing, and of course to our members who received great acknowledgement at the Law Society Excellence Awards last month Morecrofts, MSB, Weightmans and Bennett Williams Solicitors. The Annual Dinner is a great cause to commend our members for their fantastic work within the city region and to celebrate the Liverpool legal sector being recognised on a national level.
The room heard from our guest speaker, James Timpson OBE, for what one could only describe as a moving and enlightening speech. It was inspiring to hear about the work James does for the Prison Reform Trust to prevent re-offending, in a world where society often fails. James addresses the terrible surroundings offenders are faced with in prisons, and the need for “decent prisons to help provide self-growth”. A touching metaphor James referred to throughout his speech described offenders as “flowers in a desert”. You may think it is uncommon for flowers to grow in the desert, but when they are watered and nurtured, in even the most unsuspecting climates, flowers can blossom.
Julie O’Hare took the stage to round up the evening, thanking our sponsors Interlink Recruitment and Midshire, without them the evening could not have been the grand event it was.
The President’s chosen charities were the North West Legal Support Trust and Love Jasmine. The Society would like to thank everyone who made donations to one or both of these excellent causes. Over £1497.00 was raised on the night thanks to your generous contributions.

Lastly, on behalf of our President, Vice President, directors and all of us from the office, we are truly thankful to our members and guests for joining us at the 192nd Annual Dinner, and for your continued support to Liverpool Law Society. We hope to have done you all proud in “promoting the Liverpool City Region as the centre of legal excellence.”
