On 24 January 2023 Liverpool Law Society held an event at 30 James Street Hotel, Liverpool, to celebrate newly qualified lawyers. The event was hosted by Jeremy Myers, the Society’s President and HHJ Catherine Howells joined the President to hand out certificates and prizes.
This event has been in the Society’s calendar each year, for over 10 years. It was especially enjoyable that everyone was able to meet and celebrate face to face, post covid. The event was well attended by 23 newly qualified Solicitors, Barristers and CIlex, their friends, colleagues, and families, together with the Society’s Directors, Officers and Solicitors.
The President welcomed the guests and introduced David Tarttelin, Chair of Merseyside Junior Lawyers Division (MJLD). David explained the role, support and events offered by the MJLD, and invited the newly qualified lawyers to join them.
HHJ Howells congratulated the newly qualified lawyers and commended them for their achievements, in particular their commitment to continuing their studies and qualifying as lawyers during a pandemic. HHJ Howells handed out certificates and prizes to the lawyers, coupled with warm congratulations from the President.
Prizes were awarded for achievements in professional examinations based on the results of the Legal Practice Course at the Liverpool John Moores University and at the University of Law.
Each of the following prize-winners received a copy of the book ‘A Century of Liverpool Lawyers’, published by the Society, together with a cheque for £100.00:-
- Anthony Grogan from Brabners, winner of the Atkinson prize for 2022
- Chloe Roche from CEL Solicitors, winner of the Enoch Harvey prize for 2022
- Adam Goadsby from Brabners, winner of Rupert Bremner prize for 2022
- Emily Climpson from Liverpool City Council, winner of Timpron Martin prize for 2022

- The Muir Matthews Prize for a young/trainee solicitor in Liverpool who is judged to have made the largest contribution on an all-round basis, was awarded to Chelsea Kearns.
After the ceremony concluded there was time for people to network and enjoy the atmosphere.
Thank you to the President for hosting the event, and David Tournafond, Chair of Charities & Education Sub-Committee and the team at Liverpool Law Society for organising the event. Thank you to the venue, 30 James Street Hotel, and a special thank you to HHJ Howells for helping to make this event a memorable occasion for everyone, and for stepping in for HHJ Cadwallader, who was unable to attend.
We are already looking forward to next year’s event where we will celebrate all those who qualify into the law in 2023.
