UP Initiative – UP Pilot in Law
The UP Initiative is a new University of Liverpool SLSJ employability initiative for 2021. Essentially, the scheme is designed to help Widening Participation (WP) entrants on their continued journey through their degree.
What is UP?
We know that all students face challenges as they plan for their future. We also know that the playing field isn’t always level and that for some of our students, they face additional challenges that can make transition, participation and progress even more difficult. The University of Liverpool Careers and Employability Team aims to help level the playing field in as many ways as we can. Through a range of direct intervention, specialised activity and by developing a unique set of resources and tools, we hope to equip students who need our help the most with the skills, networks and confidence to be successful.
All eligible students will be able to sign up to the UP Handshake platform to access resources, tools, events and opportunities. Some students will form part of targeted cohorts who will receive additional and enhanced support alongside this. Find out more about the UP initiative, access the full brochure here
The key ingredients will be:
• HEAR accredited
• Eligible students must meet UP Criteria
• Semester 2 Pilot with small numbers
• Students from all departments but with an interest in a Law career can apply
For UP in law we intend to have six interventions with eligible students during Semester 2 of the 2020/2021 academic year. The first will be a basic introduction to the project. The last will be a careers guidance session, so looking at next steps and ongoing support. Hopefully participating students can gain HEAR accreditation as part of the UP initiative .
The 93% Club are keen to offer some support with this. We would also like to engage with some law firms in Liverpool to set up some work experience placements for UP participants. We envisage that these placements would be for a week in length. If you can offer work experience placements, or you would like to know more please contact Dr John Tribe or Anthony Murphy using the contact details below.
