A message from Christina Blacklaws,
Vice President of The Law Society:
Dear Colleagues,
As you are aware, one of the key aims for the year ahead is to promote and engage women in leadership roles in the law and I wanted to give you a quick update on this work.
Alongside the Women’s Lawyers Division, we have launched a programme of work which aims to achieve equality for women within the legal profession. It has three main objectives:
• To highlight the issues preventing parity of women with the support of statistical data from quantitative and qualitative research.
• To develop a network of international female lawyers, to support one another in the shared objective of achieving gender equality.
• To empower women to succeed and aspire to positions of leadership in the profession and inspire other women to stay in the profession and engender change from within.
As part of the project, we have developed a global quantitative survey to build on our research. We have the support of Lexis Nexis and the International Bar Association in this. We would value your input and ask for just 5 minutes of your time to complete the survey. We are asking all men and women in any legal business to respond.
You can find the survey HERE. It will run until the end of the year.
The data we gather will be part of a wider report which will be launched next year and used alongside qualitative data from a series of roundtables to shed light on the issues affecting women in the law.
2018 will be the 100th anniversary of women achieving the vote and in 2019 we will celebrate the centenary of women lawyers – both these commemorations will fall within my time as President. We are planning a series of events to highlight the outcomes of our global research and to actively engage with all colleagues – male and female. Together, I am confident, we make the changes to ensure that we retain and build upon the talent and experience of women lawyers in our firms and businesses.
Thank you so much for your help. If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
With warmest wishes,
Christina
